Phantasmagoria 2 Screencap Adventure - Chapter 1, Part 2

Well, I took a bit of a break, what with university work and all. So there was a distinct lack of updatage. HOWEVER my finals are over and I'm free, so here's some more Phantasmagoria 2!

Also, a warning. This post is hueg because there are a lot of images. Just be wary if your connection sucks.

Part 1

Okay, time to get this going again

Or do much of anything here. Back we go.

I actually blanked for a second here because I forgot that this game will actually have dynamic views, based on where you were. So I kinda stood here going 'adurr' for a second or two. Then I clicked on that door I have the cursor over.

Zomg newfangled keycard reader.

Once again I blanked, and you get to see my stupidity coming up. I was like 'wait I don't have a keycard wtf did I forget something', then I remembered you had to fish it out of your wallet.

He's smiling! He looks goofy as hell there.

You can't tell because I COVER UP MY MISTAKES but I actually failed here at first, because I didn't just use the keycard on the close button and then on the reader. I had to open the wallet again and fish out the card. Again. And THEN use it on the door.

Curtis just stares at the light like 'woo pretty'

I don't know why, but when you go through the door, the cutscene keeps going and specifically shows the door closing and the light going back red. It might be foreshadowing, I dunno.

Okay I messed up with the screencaps here. My capping program gave out on me, hence the WILDLY different image names. I had to go into the HANDY DANDY movie viewer and replay this scene with the computer. AT LEAST IT'S USEFUL SEE?

WOO MOVIE VIEWER. It actually makes it really easy to go back to anything you happened to miss.

I also missed the logon screen here. Curtis forgets his password and goes 'durr' and you have to use 'blob' as the password. Because he loves that rat.

Right about here you hear this odd whooshing noise.

I dunno why, but this little touch of having the blood spatter on the keyboard really got to me. It honestly felt like he got hit hard enough to clean bust his lip open.

I capped all of these because in the ones after you hear 'FREAK' you can see this reflection in his glasses. It shifts as you can see, and he can obviously see whatever called him a freak. It's another nice touch.

So I decide to call Trevor. Because I am gay for Trevor.

Yeah, you can actually dial here, and it's kinda neat. What I do find odd is that Curtis would do this rather than walk around, BUT HEY.

Curtis: "Hey Trev, I was wondering... have you seen anything weird today?"

Curtis: "Yeah, well.. okay, I'll talk to you later."

Fnargh, memes. These are the rules.

1. It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen. Phantasmagoria 2 Screencap Adventure - Chapter 1, Part 1

Okay so here we go. As many of you who are here know, zarla did a screencap adventure of Phantasmagoria a while back, and this prompted me to acquire and do one of Phantasmagoria 2: A Puzzle of Flesh.
Unlike most sequels, this one has NOTHING to do with the first game. At all. So, no previous experience is required, although the game does make references to the past one as a kind of name-dropping thing.
I'll be doing these in small parts because I am a university student AND MY TIME IS SO LIMITED OH GOD COURSEWORK WHY DO YOU EAT MY BRAINMEATS SO

Anyway, here we go.

Woo! [DOWN IN FRONT]

As you can see, the main menu has FAR TOO MUCH ON IT. If you play through this on DosBOX you may not see all of this. How I had to play the game was by using a Windows 98 virtual machine and using an ancient screen-capping program to grab the application screens BUT ANYWAY ENOUGH DRIVEL FROM ME

Things start off kinda weird...

Yeah I know wtf that looks kind of ominous. I also know of no place that has anything like that. This makes me want one.

Suddenly... SUNLIGHT

BAM. Glasses. Aaaand...

You take control! Okay, the weird symbol (which you'll see around the place) is your cursor. This game makes things handy for you in that in the black state you can't do anything, but when it glows white you can usually use something.

And yeah, he has a stoic 'standin around durr :B' pose as most FMV adventure game characters do.

This is kind of the inventory screen. The black bar on the bottom contains items as you get them.

THE BUTTON LIES. What it actually does is allow you to inspect inventory things, which is sometimes necessary.

Technically brings up the map, but is buggy. WE DON'T NEED IT ANYWAY.

Ooh, a useful feature. Basically, ANY video sequence you see can be rewatched using this menu. Since this is an FMV game, this can come in handy. Why, if I were a lazier man, I would just abuse this to do a 'walkthrough'. BUT I AM NOT.

SEE? Totally empty save for the opening movie.

And the control panel that has stuff like save.
Okay, ONTO THE GAME. Man the intro stuff takes forever.

He checks himself out in the mirror.

Durr. Curtis (that's his name) says something I think but I can't remember.

That's the movement cursor. Kinda like the first game. It shows you when you can move, and what general direction you'll move in.

Wait I forgot something.

Yes, you get an fmv of him opening a drawer. HIGHLY UNNECESSARY.

I'm glad their FMV adventure games were (usually) more forgiving, but still. This random bar thing is easily overlooked.

The misuse of a text.

Having read George Orwell's 1984 comparitively recently, and having re-read it over the course of last week, something struck me. The society in 1984 is an oppressive one; it limits the freedoms of the citizens, and even seeks to control how they think. The ruler is a purpoted 'benevolent' dictator called Big Brother who seeks to assure everyone that everything is fine. They schedule hate sessions, where a specific tone is played while an image of the person the public is being turned against is displayed. This tone induces a violent hatred in the viewers, and they come to associate that hatred with the image of the person.

Not only that, but they are surveilled every second of every day, with the little monitors that are so vital to their everyday lives containing monitoring equipment. Every inch of their houses are scanned, and anyone who shows dissent or does not conform to the thought patterns that the Thought Police (and by extension Big Brother) lay out are istantly snatched up and 're-educated'.

I'm sure everyone who has read 1984, or is otherwise even reading what I have described above, understands the dystopia being described. And what I find fascinating is that many people automatically associate this dystopia with a right-wing, capitalist state; and by doing so miss the entire point of the book.

EngSoc is the government central to the text, and it could not be more left-wing. It is a heavily state-centric form of government, and in addition it is socialist. Of course, this may be brushed off as a simple misrepresentation of socialism, but that is very wishful thinking. George Orwell was writing as a man who was watching the unfolding of the Marxist theory: he, more than anyone else, knew exactly what a 'socialist' ideal would be. And 1984 displays what such a dystopia would look like.

I would deal with the differences between captialism and socialism and why exactly such a government would be necessary to force socialism into a state of stability, preventing the economic collapse of the country, but that is not the point of this post. In fact, the major point of this post is to examine why people willfully ignore the socialist aspect of the book, and then misrepresent it in a way that supports their own viewpoints.

This question's answer is simple, because many people who misuse the text support socialism as an ideal, and any evidence that the ideal is not so ideal must either be ignored or discounted. This is much the case in the claims that the Nazi party of Germany were not socialists, as it is universally recognised that they were evil; so them being socialists cannot be possible as that would make socialism evil.

This type of wilful ignorance is a prime example of the Confirmation Bias. However, it does not explain what comes next. While, according to the bias, people should actively ignore the text and refute its validity, they do the exact opposite. The people who should hate it instead use it as some sort of weapon, citing it in comparison to their current government and how the government, while actually not following any of the practises laid out in the book, is similar to the Thought Police.

What accounts for this phenomenon? People misrepresent what is actually contained within a piece of literature in order to push their own agenda. The only explanation that I can currently give for something of this nature is that it is because of the book's notoriety. Before the current generation of pseudo-Liberals and the New Left were even born, this book was hailed as a masterpiece and a very good representation of a controlling dystopia. This opinion filtered its way down, and was automatically accepted by these same people who would misrepresent the actual point made.

Then, the few who read the book (as I am very sure that many who would cite it have not actually delved into the text) noticed something distressing. The author slanders their precious ideal, and makes socialism out to be requiring some form of dictatorship! Why, this cannot be, as socialism is a pure ideal; everyone is free, while the state controls everything and is the greatest good. Yet here they were, being presented with the harsh reality of what a socialist state would amount to, and they could not handle it.

The automatic reaction should have been to completey throw out the book as the ignorant ramblings of someone who could never understand The Glory Of Socialism. But this could not be done. Did not many of the greatest philosophers and thinkers praise this book? How could this be if it was portraying socialism in a negative light?

And then it begins. Their mind slowly parses what has been written as actually showing what the influences of the right-wing and conservatism will do to socialism. Yes, obviously the restriction of freedoms is because of the corrupting influence of that. So they begin to believe it, and as they do, they begin to espouse this outright set of lies. And this misrepresentation becomes popular, as their 'choir' loathes anything against socialism. And then, eventually, the popular thought process becomes that 1984 is actually a pro-socialist, anti-conservative text, and is quoted as such.

This process is both fascinating, and horrifying. Because if it can happen to a simple piece of fiction, nothing more than a social commentary, then what's to prevent it happening to history? Indeed, has it already happened? Even now, the Nazi party is spoken of as being some form of right-wing, captialist pigs. Stalin's communism was actually not real communism, that's why it failed. The crusades were initially started by the Christians and were nothing more than a bloodthirsty war, for no real reason. These, and more, are the warped versions of history that are being pushed as being real; and they are accepted by the people as being true.

As you can see, what started as nothing more than a post on how a book can be twisted to serve a purpose far from what it has been intended has turned into something discussing the distortion of history itself. And I consider it a beautiful metaphor for the snowball effect that will take hold because of these distortions. My parting message is this: analyse everything for what it is. Throw out your preconceived notions, ignore the 'popular opinion', and see it for what it really is. Only then can we continue to preserve the truth in all its forms.

So guys? The Gargoyles comic book? Worth every penny. It's about time the story was continued, and it's only been eleven years in the making. But for those of us who remember the awesomeness that was the TV series, the comic books do not disappoint. The art differs, as is to be expected, and there is no voice talent behind it to bring the characters to life like how it was in the series. But the pacing is done in such a way that you can hear the voices of the characters as you read it. Greg Weisman is a brilliant writer, and this comic shows it easily. Highly reccommended.

In other news, Marvel is jumping the shark with their recent Captain America death bit. And to make it worse, they might cast The Punisher as the new Cap figure. Which is so incredibly stupid that it cannot be put into words. So here's hoping the writers find what little common sense they had, and that they do it before World War Hulk. Worst part is that I'm probably still going to buy the World War Hulk stuff, just because it's gonna be awesome in a basket. Especially any of it doing with the Cable & Deadpool series, which is the only thing by Marvel I will consistently buy.

And on a final note: anyone who enjoys comics should read Gold Digger. Fred Perry makes me glee with each subsequent issue. It's hard to catch up on now, what with there being a 33 comic gap from the end of the last big compilation volume and several of those comics going out of print (so it seems). But if you want to get into it, I reccommend getting the Gold Bricks, which collect 25 issues each, and then trying to buy the other 33 to fill in the gap. It's well worth the money.

Yaaay, so the Democrats have taken control of the House and possibly balanced the Senate, whoopee.

Why, yes, that is sarcasm. Why do you ask?

First off, before anyone gets to calling me a psychotic right-winger, kindly note that I am not. Though every party on the planet hates me for it, I am a centrist, also known as a moderate.

Take a good look at the senate. The Democrats cannot take majority control, as the Republicans have 49 seats, and with only two seats left, the Democrats have 47. Independants have 2. This means that there is no way for either party to barrel through anything in the senate, as even if the Dems get the other two seats, it's balanced. At which point it comes down to the independants.

This means that the US is now in a stalemate. This is a good temporary fix and will cause each party to carefully consider what they want to pass, and is also a good thing, because there will have to be (shock and motherfucking awe) compromises.

Well, this is a good thing. I'm pretty sure people are saying "what the fuck Gabe, then why aren't you celebrating?"

I am. Just not what you are.

I'm celebrating a balance of power and a stalemate. I'm not celebrating the Democrats supposedly 'winning'. You fucking heard me, unlike all of those other supposed moderates who have suddenly gone to supporting the Democrats while claiming to be in the center (you assholes know who you are), I am not cheering for the Democrats.

People like to lick the boots of the Democrats and claim they're good for civil rights. Well, you may be right there, once you're not a Chrisitan. And I do not support anyone who claims to support civil rights while focusing on one group for their slander campaigns. It's called hypocrisy. So okay, I'll somewhat support them for that if they get their heads out of their asses.

But I will not support them for their dreams of expanding government control and power.

And their insistence on supporting very specific parts of the constitution (free speech, free religion, etc.) while trying to push laws against other acts which 'make them feel less safe' (gun control) is bullshit. I'm sure they'd love to take away arms from the citizens, just like every other blossoming dictatorship out there. So when the citizens call bullshit, they can be put down with little resistance.

Yes, fine, this is doomsaying. I don't think the Democrats are going to try and create Soviet America anytime soon, but neither do I think that 'Bushitler' [sic] is trying to 'repress your very freedoms'. If he was repressing your fucking freedoms, then you wouldn't be able to complain or see anything opposing his viewpoint because CNN and NBC wouldn't fucking exist.

My message is that the current situation is nice, because there's a balance and the parties are going to have to work together and with the independants to pass laws and run the country. This will likely lead to some very good compromises that will benefit the country -- and hence the world -- as a whole. Because like it or not, what goes on in the US can impact the rest of us. And if things work out, there should be some resolutions.

Right, just finished dealing with the miscellaneous angst stored in here from years ago. I should do that with my DA journal, but anyway.

I'm going to officially use this as my creative journal, for whenever I have ideas that relate to my writings, poetry, or assorted ramblings. It should suffice my Creative Writing teacher. So, onwards!

No ideas for today, except that emo elves can be used to great hilarity when done right.
